Erythema nodosum leprosum is defined by the appearance of tender skin nodules, which can be accompanied by fever, joint pain, neuritis, edema, malaise and/or lymphadenopathy. The authors describe the case of a 19-year-old Angolan black woman, resident in Portugal for the last 10 years, diagnosed with Hansen's disease at the age of 12, irregular with follow-up and non-compliant with treatment. متن کاملOur experience of the use of thalidomide in the steroid-dependent severe erythema nodosum leprosum.
Sir, Severe, chronic, recurrent erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a serious problem. Patients are in need of effective and safe treatment because there is a danger of steroid dependence. Thalidomide has been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of refractory ENLs.[1] A number of dosage regimens of thalidomide, an expensive drug, have been tried.[1-3] We describe our experience of the ...

One of the biggest challenges in treating leprosy is the control of reaction events. Patients with lepromatous leprosy may present reaction type II, or erythema nodosum leprosum, during treatment, and this reaction can remain in a recurrent form after being released from the hospital, requiring the use of thalidomide and/or prednisone for long periods of time, in turn increasing the risk of sid...
متن کاملThe Mortality Associated with Erythema Nodosum Leprosum in Ethiopia: A Retrospective Hospital-Based Study
BACKGROUND Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a debilitating multisystem disorder which complicates leprosy. It is characterised by fever, malaise and painful erythematous cutaneous nodules. ENL is often recurrent or chronic in nature and frequently severe. Patients often require prolonged treatment with high doses of oral corticosteroids. There are no data on the mortality associated with trea...
متن کاملTreatment of severe refractory erythema nodosum leprosum with tumor necrosis factor inhibitor Etanercept.
Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a common complication of lepromatous leprosy. Some patients unresponsive to conventional, first-line therapeutics develop recurrent, recalcitrant ENL. Here, we report a case of severe refractory ENL that was successfully treated with Etanercept. Biologics may be considered as therapeutic alternatives in management of severe, recalcitrant ENL.
